Liang Wenchong wins the Nanshan China Masters in the playoffs
Liang Wenchong birdied the fifth extra hole in the sudden-death playoffs to outshine YE Yang for a victory in the Nanshan China Masters, on Sunday, October 14, 2012.
The US$1 million tournament was being played at the Nanshan International Golf Club, featuring some of the best players on the OneAsia Tour.
Wenchong had the outright lead, entering the final round. However, he faltered in the final moments of the tournament for a two-over par 73 in the last round.
Meanwhile, Yang finished his campaign with a two-under par 69 for an eight-under par tournament score to join Wenchong on top of the leaderboard.
As a result, the game entered the sudden-death playoffs, where both the players played the 18th hole five times in order to settle the winner.
At one time, it seemed as if Aaron Townsend of Australia will give outshine both the leaders, entering the last five holes of his round.
However, he failed to keep the momentum going and bogeyed two of the last six holes to miss the chance of joining the duo in the playoffs.
According to the golf commentators, it was good to see both Wenchong and Yang contending for a win, especially after each spent almost two years without a win on the OneAsia Tour.
Talking to the reporters after the event finished, Wenchong said that he was pleased with the way he received the victory. He stated that it was exciting to play against Yang, who is no doubt one of the best players from the Asian region.
“I’m very happy,” said Liang. “I have never been involved in something like this, so thanks to YE for making it so exciting”.
He added, “YE Yang is a great player, and I played the first two rounds with Louis (Oosthuizen), so I learned a lot by playing with both of them”.
Yang, in the meantime, was disappointed with his performance in the playoffs. Yet, he hailed Wenchong’s performance throughout the tournament.
“I am a bit disappointed,” he said. “It was very tiring to have to play five more holes, but Liang played some good golf”.
