Liang Xiaoyu defeats Prajongjai Rawinda in second round of Badminton Asia Youth U-19 Championships
Singapore’s young player, Liang Xiaoyu reserved her berth in the Women’s Singles round-of-16 after defeating Thailand’s Prajongjai Rawinda, in the second round of the Badminton Asia Youth U-19 Championships, in India, on Wednesday, July 6.
Xiaoyu delivered a stunning performance against Rawinda, who was the third seed in the Women’s Singles draw of the championship. The Singaporean cheered the Indian crowd by playing top-class badminton and finished off the match in three games.
Right from the start of this second-round fight, both shuttlers entertained the crowd by playing good badminton. It was the Thai shuttler who remained dominant in the first game, where the Singaporean was trailing far behind. Xiaoyu failed to find her momentum
in the first set and lost it with a big margin of 13-21, in 14 minutes.
The following set was an interesting fight between the young shuttlers, who remained close in the whole set until the concluding phase of the game. Xiaoyu employed everything she had in her arsenal to get control of the rallies.
Rawinda’s wrong shot selection and negative play put her in trouble against the spirited Singaporean, who was playing flawless badminton. The Thai shuttler played some wrong strokes at the ending points of the game by hitting the shuttlecock wide of the
court which helped the Singaporean to win the set with a close difference of 21-19, in 18 minutes.
The third and deciding game was completely one-sided, where Xiaoyu played a completely different game. She played fast rallies by executing strong pushes coupled with powerful smashes. Her power-play created pressure on her opponent, who played nervously
throughout the whole set.
The impressive play of Xiaoyu earned her the final game with a stunning margin of 21-11, in just 13 minutes. The Singaporean finished-off the game in 45 minutes by a margin of 13-21, 21-19 and 21-11.
In the women’s singles round-of-16, Xiaoyu will take on Malaysia’s Cheah Sonia Su Ya, who crushed Japan’s Torii Ayano in the second round of the championship.
