  1. The US and Ireland, both are Republics and are fundamentally libertarian. Sadly the US is slowly losing its liberty as more taxes are levied and rights are eroded.

  2. Whatever criteria you use, the United States will come out near the top. With strong constitutional protection for civil rights, republican form of government (structure, not partisanship), and relative economic freedom, we aren't doing too bad.

Another strong contender would be Switzerland. They have a very decentralized government, low tax rates, and a non-interventionist foreign policy. They do have compulsory military service and restrictive immigration laws.

Many groups draw up lists on a single factor. The Heritage Foundation has a top 10 list of economic freedom, which includes Hong Kong, Singapore, Ireland, Australia, United States, New Zealand, Canada, Chile, Switzerland and the UK. Some of these countries are just business friendly.

State of World Liberty has rankings which purport to include all aspects of freedom. Again we see Ireland, Canada, Switzerland, the UK, the US, and New Zealand in the top ten. We also see Estonia, Iceland, the Bahamas, and Cyprus.

Another factor which libertarians would say factors into the long term stability of freedom is the form of government. Of those countries mentioned, only the United States, Australia, Canada, and Switzerland are federal republics. With this in mind, I'd give the tip of the hat to Switzerland for the most libertarian country right now.

  3. There are none.

But the United States has one of the world's *least* libertarian systems. It imprisons more of its people than any other country. It occupies other countries. It has an endemic surveillance state.

  4. as much as some countries give us a bad rap== the good ol USA is right up there with the top 2== I guess you would have to throw in the swiss, even if only for the cheese and watches==
