A guy asked me the other day how could any libertarian vote for a lib like obama, and biden. Really it would make more since, considering the libs are more conservative then repubs these days when it comes to government spending, special interests, military (war), and pretty much every economical stand point.

Add all of that along with the lib civil liberty point of views and you almost have yourself a libertarian.

I guess my question is, am i not right?

  1. The Neocons are fascists and the complete opposite of Libertarians.

That is what shocked me about Dr. Ron Paul being in the Neocon Party.

If Ron Paul had been in the Democrat party he would have been the main competition for Obama instead of Hillary.

  2. Ironically, the Dems have been the party which more closely resembles the Libertarians where the Republicans have been overtaken with religious zealots who want to infringe on people's rights.  At least the Dems care about intelligence and governing and everything is not just a political game. McCain's pick of Palin should scare any intelligent person who cares about governing skill to vote for the Democrats.  The Republicans talk about saving but the last 3 Reps. Presidents have exploded the debt and the one Democrat balanced the budget and gave us a surplus.  Also, scholars have mentioned that Obama has a belief in scientific research in terms of making political decisions and he consults experts and research before making decisions on his possible policy initiatives.  He actually believes in trying to find out what policies will work based on research in terms of economy, crime, education, etc.  McCain seems like Bush and will just go with his gut and political calculation and not based his decisions on scientific research.  Not to mention he is more likely to waste money on the military and he is keeping the Bush economic plan which has basically bankrupted our nation's future just for some short economic gain.

  3. It sounds like you may be. Some things that used to be conservative, such as spending responsibly, is now only done by Democrats. Every time that there has been a Repub president since 1980, the Repubs have spent us into a deficit.

  4. If you consider yourself Libertarian, and agree with 1 thing that Obama has said since this campaign started, you're not being completely honest with yourself. There is not 1 d**n thing about Obama that would agree with a true Libertarian.

  5. As someone who lives in liberal NY, modern liberals are a horrible choice for libertarians.  Liberal NY has the highest taxes in the nation, yet the state's so broke it has to cut back even how much it mows the grass on state land.  They make blatantly unconstitutional laws, like banning the "n-word" in NYC, dictating what types of shirts you can wear in certain places (ie; no clothing with tobacco company logos in substance abuse places), etc.  Don't even get me started on gun laws.  It's not just guns, though.  Nunchuckus, "dangerous knives" ("dangerous knives"=law's wording, not mine), throwing stars, etc are also banned.  I could go on and on.  Modern liberals are the libertarian's worst enemy.

  6. its funny you mentioned the whole military funding thing, because last time i checked obama has been much more liberal funding our troops than mccain http://mediamatters.org/items/2008060400...

  7. You are not even close!  Libertarians are for MUCH less government and you don't get that with either party.  Obama's tax plan alone is BIG BROTHER stealing your lunch money.  Libertarian views let you live your OWN life and the Dems want MORE control of your life than the Reps do.

  8. Sure, you're right. Both libertarians and true liberals are socially liberal and advocates of individual rights over anything else. Plus, at this point in time, it does indeed seem like the Dems are more fiscally responsible than the Republicans, and by cutting taxes and cutting programs the way they claim they'd like to do, they're actually more fiscally conservative as well.

  9. Well the Libertarian views as I believe them to be match up pretty closely with the Dem platform this election.

So yeah I think you are right.

Bronson P once we enter into war we can't not give the men and women fighting for use the funds to survive. The Dems tend to not get us into the war to begin with though.

  10. This question would be a scream to play word games with. Yes it's true the paradigm has shifted, (even veered) concerning the hot button word ~liberal~. However, semantics be damned, in the case of we who are sure enough "Libertarians" the only thing that has changed is that as America gets older and wiser our party grows, (to the consternation of the moribund Reps and the decaying Dems!) I don't need for a minute to try to legitimize the Libertarian platform, anyone who takes the time to examine it in depth for themselves is usually jolted by the common sense, (and other things) and many will convert, it's happening every day. The only reason I'm responding to this question is that we as a group don't really want to be compared to either of the do nothing revenue hunting conglomerates calling themselves the peoples representatives. We believe every man/woman has the right to live in freedom, defend themselves their family and property, contribute to the common good, and keep control of their government. We absolutely believe the constitution of the United States of America to be one of the most enlightened documents ever written, and that it's dilution by special interests should not be allowed to continue. This forum is not the place for a meaningful discourse, but any who believe themselves concerned with the future of humanity would do well to examine the "real" Libertarian philosophy, not that unreal one given you by the polemic rhetoric of the power hogs in our bloated government, and the pseudo intellects who lately refer to themselves as liberal.

  11. You are wrong.  Liberals are not more conservative with spending.  On top of that they believe in taxes, taxes, and more taxes.  And lots of social programs.  That's not liberatarian at all.

  12. I've made the argument that the libs are the ones that are conservative and the conservatives are the one most often willing to throw their fate to the wind.

  13. Principles of personal liberty, the right to own property, the right to the fruits of you own labors, and the importance of maintaining a free and open market are the basis of Classical Liberalism, it was one of the guiding principles upon which the U.S. was founded.  It is another that government policies have to change with the times or liberties will be lost through an inability to keep up with foreign competition.  The Libertarians are the ones most clinging to Classic Liberal philosophy, it's just that most of them don't know the History of their own Party, or the sources of it's principles.  The Conservatives reject everything to do with Liberalism because it means accepting change and making hard decisions, possibly even sacrifices of the luxuries to which they've gotten accustomed, for the good of the country.  They cling to the idea that if they just wish hard enough all the problems will go away by themselves.
