Liberty University Men’s Volleyball team ready to rumble in the season finale – Volleyball news
The Liberty University men’s volleyball team, which is generally regarded as the Flames, is set to close the 2012 season on a good note.
The 2012 National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) National Championships in Kansas City will serve as the last seasonal tournament for the Flames. The NCVF Championship kicked off on Thursday, April 5 and is scheduled to complete its run on Sunday.
The two-day event of 2012 NCVF has received a total of 360 teams from every nook and cranny of the country, while Flames of Liberty University are also on board to prove their endeavours.
Quite recently, the Liberty Flames competed at the NCVF’s Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) South Division and finished sixth, which was not a bad finish for an inexperienced squad. The Liberty team is composed of many fresh players but
looks to work its position up in the regional tournaments. There are only three seniors in the team, while rest of the roster features juniors and underclassmen.
The team, though limited on experience, performed amazingly well at the conference tournament which was hosted by James Madison University last month. The Flames clashed with tough competitor the University of Virginia and held them off for a superb victory.
However, the team lost its next match against North Carolina State.
Sophomore libero Steven Abbott and junior outside hitter Jamie Stedjan were the real highlight of the matches. Abbott joined Liberty volleyball programme with only two years of competitive volleyball experience, while Stedjan transferred from an NCAA Division
II volleyball programme.
The Liberty Flames are supervised by Head Coach Bryan Rigg, who is quite impressed with the current progress of his team. Rigg is focused on the growth of his team and he has been putting a lot of effort. Speaking of the team, he stated, “The players are
continuing to improve. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores who, after playing in the fall are getting better.”
The Liberty team is currently in action at the on-going NCVF Championships in Kansas. The team mentor has high hopes that his side will put a nice end to the season.
