Libor Podmol claims victory in first round of 2012 FIM Freestyle MX World Championship
Czech Republic’s freestyle motocross (FMX) rider Libor Podmol emerged triumphant in an exciting final of the opening round of 2012 International Motorcyclist Federation (FIM) Freestyle Motocross (MX) World Championship that went down at Palasport Olimpico
Turin, Italy, on Friday, March 2.
France’s Remi Bizouard took runner-up place while Spain’s Maikel Melero finished third to complete the podium.
The opening round of the latest season of FIM Freestyle MX World Championship, a part of International Freestyle Motocross Federation (IFMXF) Night of the Jumps tour, saw the return of the best motocross riders from around the world. With an ability to create
magic on their bikes while floating through the air, the riders were once again keen on leaving the crowd stunned with their gravity-defying and mind-boggling tricks during their campaign for the FIM Championship title.
After surviving the 12-man qualifications round, Podmol made his way into the six-man Final to battle it out with a handful of in-form riders for the coveted event victory.
The 2010 FIM champion Podmol put on a spectacular performance on Friday to eventually finish with 392 points. The score held on until the end, consequently sealing the fate of the Final in his favour.
Bizouard put on a remarkable fight throughout the course of the battle but failed to edge past his Czech rival on the score-board. As a result, he finished behind Podmol in second place with 390 points.
Melero also put on an impressive performance during the Final, finishing in third place with 360 points, securing a place on the podium as a result.
Last year’s FIM Champion Javier Villegas of Chile was notably missing from Friday’s final following an accident during the 12-man qualifications round. He was knocked unconscious and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Even though the medical reports
revealed that he was not seriously injured, he still remained unfit the next day.
With the conclusion of the first round of 2012 FIM Freestyle MX World Championship on Friday, the IFMXF Night of the Jumps World Tour moved on to the second round of the series on Saturday, March 3.
