Question:

License Plate Revoked. How Do I get A New One?

A few months ago I lost my job due to "company downsizing" so I was unable to pay for my auto insurance, it lapsed the beginning of February. I now have a new job and can afford insurance but I have just been taking my time getting it. Well, today on the way home from work I got pulled over by a Zebulon, NC police officer due to not having insurance. He was really nice and thanked me for being so honest with him about my situation and let me drive the car home (with him following me ofcourse), and revoked my license plate. I received a sitation and have a court date, he said if I got insurance before then it would probably be a slap on the wrist, but since I will be getting insurance Friday, how do I go about getting a license plate between then and July 31st (the court date)

  1. I do not no but I guess you should not have taken your time about getting it.

  2. I've never heard anything like that.  Can the officer really confiscate your license plate?  I don't think so.  Call the local police department and notify them.

  3. Answer from a General Insurance Agent

You can't legally get another plate while this one is revoked.

Most states are now doing that with uninsured drivers, You're very fortunate that you got a nice officer who did you a favor by escorting you home and by not impounding your car, saving you a whole lot of money.

Most states will impound the vehicle now and leave you standing on side the road. The officer is not obligated to drive you home.

A Police officer does have the authority to confiscate your plates if he has determined that those plates are not valid or are being used illegally

You will have to get insurance before they will re-instate your plates and registration.

If you are found guilty of driving without insurance, you will soon be receiving a notice in the mail that your drivers license has also been suspended due to driving the vehicle without insurance.

Trying to find a way now to get around the law and continue to drive illegally is not a very nice way to repay the favor the officer did for you.

(Suspension is now first offense when it comes to financial responsibility)

    Good Luck
