Question:

License and Registration?

So I got pulled over today for not having my License Plate on the back of my car.

My license plate got stolen a year ago and I filed a police report (nothing came of that) and I got a new license plate. I display the new one in the back car window. It happened to have fallen over when I was pulled over and I just showed the cop that. No ticket.

He told me it has to be permanently attached to the car and not in the window of my car.

I don't want to get it stolen again...and the anti-theft screws that work for license plate DON'T FIT MY CAR!!!!

Couple questions:

When the cop asks for license and registration what exactly is he looking for? I showed the cop my license and proof of insurance and that was fine. What is the registration he would be looking for? My title? I am not driving with my title in the car...that would suck if it got stolen.

Also...what should I do with my license plate? How do I get it attached to my car without it being able to be stolen? WTF!?!?!

  1. 1.  Liscense- proves you are allowed to drive a car

Registration card- proves that the car can legally be on the road.  I think it has an expiration date of some sort.  Every year or two the car has to be re registered to stay on the road.  Basically, the Registration is just the paper the DMV gives you when you pay your registration fee.  The paper has your car info and liscence plate number on it

NEVER PUT THE TITLE IN THE CAR

I keep my owners manual, registration card, and insurance card in my car.  My insurance card aint nuthin but a card that sais GEICO and the phone number.

    2.  Im pretty sure a body shop could get those screws to fit.  If the screws are too big, you could try to make the holes bigger.  If the screws are to small, i have no idea

  2. Call the place that issues your license plates (department of transportation), or ask someone at a paint and body shop if they have any advice.

License is of course your drivers' license and registration is your car insurance. They should send you some kind of piece of paper of course, and your name and address on it should match your drivers' license, and the car that you're driving should be on there.

Back to the license plate, they make screws that they use in, like, public restrooms, where the grooves are backwards and you can't undo them with a regular screwdriver. Or even try some odd hex screws that you can only undo with a hex key.

  3. The registration to the car proves ownership--the name and address of the registered owner is listed on the registration.  car registration should also never be left in the vehicle..most times when pulled over, not providing a current registration is a huge red flag to police.

Never leave your title in the car either!

I would affix the tag to your car as required by law.

I think the chances of it getting stolen again are smaller than you think..

Sorry Amy K, you're wrong--a registration is NOT insurance.  A Vehicle registration is usually the compulsory registration of a vehicle with a government authority.

Passenger and commercial vehicles must be registered as a condition of use on a public road.

  4. Vehicle registration shows that the vehicle is registered to you or the owner of the vehicle and can help a police officer search to make sure that the vehicle is not stolen or has any crimes done with it.

Insurance is a completely different paper when it comes to registration.  Every vehicle needs to have some type of insurance when it is being driven on the street for some type of coverage to either your car or the other car involved in an accident

Your title is just a paper that says that you have FULL ownership of the vehicle and that the car is yours!
