Question:

License plates in Texas?

Bought a new car on 08/09/2008 and today my paper plates expire, they said 8-30 on them. I still haven't received my real plates in the mail. I heard it takes about 3 weeks so I understand they will probably come next week.

Can I still drive around with these paper plates? Just curious, I can borrow a car for a few days but I just don't want a ticket.

Thanks,

  1. Paper tags are good for 21 days from the date of purchase.  Depending on the county and how busy the tax office is, it can take 30+ days to get your plates.  Call the dealer where you purchased the vehicle, and tell them you need an extension (blue tag).  It will be good for another 21 days.  If you don't have your plates by the time your blue tag expires (this would be 42 days from the date of purchase), then it likely means that the dealership mishandled some of the paperwork and delyed getting it to the tax office.  They can get you another 30 day temporary tag if this happens.  It will cost them $30...don't let them pass this cost onto you!  No reason that the tags should take more than 30-35 days from the date of purchase.  :-)

  2. You must get a new temporary license plate with an extended date on it from the dealership where you purchased the car.  Inquire about when you should receive the permanent plates .

  3. so ask the dealer for another paper tag for goodness sakes and get over it.  Its not a big thing.  The worst thing you could do is get a paper tag from the dmv for a couple weeks yourself.
