  1. Hans-Adam II, styled HSH The Sovereign Prince of Liechtenstein born February 14, 1945, Zurich, is the currently reigning Prince of Liechtenstein.

Alois Philipp Maria, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein born 11 June 1968 in Zürich is the eldest son of Prince Hans Adam II of Liechtenstein. He is first in line to become the next "The Sovereign Prince of Liechtenstein" when his father passes away.

The Principality of Liechtenstein is a constitutional monarchy, which is a form of government established under a constitutional system that acknowledges an elected or hereditary monarch as head of state, but the real power lies with its prime minister. In a constitutional monarchy system "the monarch reigns but does not rule" as in the case with The Principality of Liechtenstein.

  2. In kingdoms, the monarch is a "king" or "queen" and the heir is a "prince".   The heir(ess) is a "prince(ess)".

In principalities, the monarch and the heir are both princes/princesses.

To differentiate, the monarch is called the Sovereign Prince (like Hans Adam).   The heir is called the Hereditary Prince (like Alois).

The Royal Family in Luxembourg uses similar titles.   The monarch is the Sovereign Grand Duke and his son is the Hereditary Grand Duke.

When  you ask who "rules" it would probably be fairer to say that the elected government rules.   The Prince "reigns" and has little or no executive power.

  3. Administration
