Liebelei Lawrence off to decent start at Hero Women’s Indian Open
Liebelei Lawrence of Luxembourg got off to a decent start at the Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012 as she shot a 70 in the first round on Friday.
The three-round tournament, being played at the prestigious DLF Golf & Country Club, New Delhi, India, saw Lawrence unveil her best putting skills on the first day, and she looked more than
confident than most of the big names.
The Ladies European Tour (LET) star opened the round with a birdie on the first hole. She then parred the second hole, but lost her grip on the driver and ended up carding her first bogey
on the par-3 third.
She tried to regain composure and was able to sink a par-putt on the fourth hole. However, she fumbled on the greens of par-4 5th hole and registered her second bogey of the day.
Lawrence knew that her short game was good enough to help her get through the remaining holes with a good score on the leaderboard. She tactfully handled the ball on greens of par-5 6th
and launched a much-needed birdie to offset bogey impact.
On the back nine, Lawrence let spectators see her best side as she avoided carding bogeys. She sank an eagle in the last hole to cap off the round in impressive style.
Commentators said that the young gun made a solid start to her campaign, and it is expected that she will keep the pressure intact on her rivals and score even better in the last two rounds
on Saturday and Sunday.
Since the field is loaded with almost all the big names, it is somewhat difficult for Lawrence to keep the momentum going in the final two rounds. But she looks firm to avoid the mistakes
that caused her to card two bogeys in the first round.
Swedish Caroline Hedwall is eagerly seeking to win the title again, as the defending champion has vowed that she has made an even more solid plan for the 2012 edition of the tournament.
In addition to Hedwall, the tournament is also featuring giants like Scottish Carly Booth and Thai Pornanong Phatlum who finished runner-up last year, and has also won two titles in 2008 and
2009 edition.
