i'm about 18 and i have a girlfriend. when we first met i told her ive been to the country my mom is from (a central american country). I know I shouldnt have but I was always tired of everyone saying OMG u never been to where your ancestry is from? plus i thought she would be impressed that I traveled at such a young age. we are so into the relationship and I just kind of went with it. I'm pretty sure admitting the truth now would p**s her off. We are planning to travel to mexico this summer. is there any way that will reveal i never went out of the country? she asked if I had a passport i said I was too little to remember but the truth is i never traveled out of the US.

save the critisism I already know i lied about it. Ive heard there were less strict rules back then and a passport was not needed for minors, is this true?

  1. Don't worry about your lie, there are plenty of things that she would like you to believe about her as well, and some things that you'll never know about.

  2. i traveled when i was little and i'm around your age and i had a passport. soooo... stick with having a passport.

  3. Back then small children were included on their parents passports and did not have one of their own (they still needed to be on one!)....just go out now and get your own and nobody will know the difference.....

  4. I can remember when I was your age and embellishing a bit on the truth in order to make myself sound more exciting and worldly. I can think of a lot worse things you could fib about. At least you recognize your lapse in judgment and have learned from your mistake. right?

Now, to the passport issue. When I went to Mexico as a kid with my parents, all they needed to get us into the country was a birth certificate. This was thirty years ago. I have not kept up on the rules and regulations, so don't know what it would have been like when you were seven. Regardless, I can't imagine that a passport you had as a minor (even if you really had traveled back then) would still be valid today. The picture would be completely outdated, as would your information. You're an adult now and would likely need a brand new passport.

Hope this helps. And, DO NOT fib to your girlfriend anymore! If she starts having doubts about your honesty even with little things, she will begin to wonder if you are lying about anything else. I'm not passing judgment...I'm just offering a little motherly advice.

Hope all goes well and you have a great trip!
