Life is all about timing – Snedeker eagle-eyes season ‘13
We are going to be talking about OWGR’s 10th man and the PGA Tour’s 3rd, and that, besides making Brandt Snedeker the danger man in golf’s latest season, makes this article a must-read.
2012 has been, if not a McIlroy or a Donald year, definitely a Snedeker year. Despite the Ryder Cup loss to Olazbal’s lads earlier this season, Snedeker looks to make 2013 his own.
He has the putt to match the strut, and earnings that, with a little help from two PGA Tour wins and 20 cuts made, top at $4,989,739 for the year.
In September, Snedeker displayed what could have been the greatest putting the game has seen. He won the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship, pocketing $11.4 million in winner’s checks. Not a bad day’s work.
Justin Rose, who had been playing alongside Snedeker, said for long Snedeker had been considered as one of the best putters the game has to offer.
At the FedEx Cup that Sunday, Snedeker pulled every crucial putt. Where putts had been needed, he had drained them – every one of them.
"His putting is what Brandt lives and dies by," said Justin Rose. To him, it was one of the reasons the Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III had used one of his four captain’s picks on Snedeker.
Even though it was a move that brought about criticism because there were other players, like Hunter Mahan, for example, who had more Ryder Cup experience.
Anyway, to the fidgety, long-haired Vanderbilt graduate, “life, like golf, is all about timing.” As the game’s latest accidental mogul, he joined last year’s Bill Haas in proclaiming an unexpected excitement.
"It's crazy," Snedeker said. "You start throwing around a number like 10 million, it's like crazy talk. It's like winning the lottery".
"I don't know what to tell you I'm going to do with it because I have no clue what I'm going to do with it. I really don't know what to expect. I never thought about having this much money before".
The man from Nashville, who had majored in Communications and is an avid fan of his College’s sports teams, was first introduced to golf by a grandmother, who managed a green course in West Plains, Missouri.
He had been hooked the moment he picked up a club and taken the first swing.
For the coming season, all is green for Snedeker. There is a list of enthralling tournaments lined up for the teeing and Snedeker, quite indubitably, seems to be a favourite.
There is a small taste of victory he has already tasted. On Sunday, eager worshipping fans gathered together for a session of urging Snedeker, to them the god of their game.
Chants of "U-S-A" echoed through the Georgia pines. That’s our earful right there.
