Life as a Homicide Detective?

I was wondering if life as a homicide detective that does cold cases is anything like the lives of the people on the tv show cold case? Whats it like?

It's a killer..

No really - you would have to work at a very large department to be in that assignment and first work many many years as a beat officer and make great arrests and be the sharpest gal out there.

I know of no departments that assign guys to cold cases unless something new comes up - TV rarely represents a day at the department.
