  1. hmm. its more of ups and downs for me :)

  2. this is what happens when I grow them in my back yard.

most annuals take 2 years to grow where I live, so this might not be typical.

    start with the seed,

they grow to make cute plants,

the first year they grow a tiny bulb,

then winter kills off the tops,

then in the spring they grow back leaves,

during the summer they get big bulbs,

then winter kills off the leaves again,

then the next year the tops grow big and fast with seed heads growing on the top of a tall green round stem,

the seeds are black and orange slice shaped and about 1/8 inch long.

  3. The onion is a biennial, it takes two years to complete it's life cycle from seed to bulb to flowering and setting new seeds.

  4. My garden onions are in their "born again" cycle.  Planted bulbs this spring, tops died off during the heat of the summer (they were watered with the rest of the garden) and now I'm not watering it and my onions are are growing green tops again.  Go figgure!
