Question:

Life insurance medical question?

So, there's a nurse coming over as part of my life insurance application, to take a cheek swab - I was told, to check for nicotine.

Is it really just nicotine she's looking for, or can they look for other things, or take my DNA?

  1. Not without your permission, it's very serious.

  2. They are not permitted by law to test you for something without your permission.   It could be just tobacco, or it could be tobacco and AIDS antibodies.  There are probably other possibilities, too.  It's way too expensive to test for all abnormalities/conditions, so it will be a pretty narrow window.

The nurse should give you paperwork to sign that will disclose everything they are testing for.  If you have any questions she or he should be able to answer them.  If not your insurance agent will.

    Good luck!

  3. Life insurance companies do not use DNA testing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they take urine and blood as well and check for other health conditions and drug use.

  4. More than just nicotine.  They wouldn't bother if that's ALL they were looking for.
