with usual life insurance policies, do they still pay out if the person has commited suicide?

  1. I'm going to answer your question based on the laws here in Texas.  But it is my impression that this holds true in the other states as well.

    Suicide is not covered for the first two years that the life insurance policy has been in force.  After that it is covered the same as any other cause of death.

  3. Most states require the policy to be in force for at least two years before they will consider paying on someone who commits suicide.

    If someone dies sooner than that, and the insurance company suspects suicide, the company can require an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.  The insurance company would pay for the autopsy, but the family cannot refuse the procedure if they want to collect on the policy.
