Question:

Life of Pi question (not homework, I swear!)?

So I am on chapter 12 of The Life of Pi and this chapter has the strange italic writing I haven't figured out yet. They mention Richard Parker, are we suppose to not know who he is yet or did I skip something? I just finished the chap. were Pi has his father tell him how dangerous all the animals are.

Thanks for any help, and please don't give the rest of the book away
