  4. Well there are basically 2 routes to being a pro snowboarder... Video Parts or Contests.  Either way will gain you sponsorship from companies within or connected to the industry.  Some of these companies (the more major ones) may pay you some money and for you to travel around the world.  Some of the smaller ones just give you free stuff.   Of course there are a few very talented riders who do both of these successfully - for example Andreas Wiig, Erro Etalla, Lauri Heiskari, Dustin Craven, etc.

I would venture to say the vast majority of pro snowboarders do not gain much (if any) money from it.  What they do gain can be spent easily on partying and snowmobiles.  Only the cream of the crop are living in luxury.

Yes, the Olympics can be a massive display for a pro snowboarder to get his name out to millions of people worldwide.  However, the Olympics only showcases Halfpipe and Boardercross.  Both are very specific parts of the sport, the later not being very popular at all anymore.  The X-Games is probably the best event to participate in for a professional snowboarder.

You could be sponsored as a little kid (if you're good enough) but the older you get the less chance you have (but doesn't always hold true)... for example how many teenagers do you see riding big mountain lines?  Almost none.  There are many aspects that you can make your living by... riding rails and jibs, halfpipe, big mountain, originality, jumps, or just plain nice style - but scoring in a majority of these categories definitely ups your cred.

    Good luck...
