  1. I have no clue what max is talking about....LMAO there are no swamps at Fort we were stationed there for 4 years and just left in May. And if you consider 80 degrees hot, then I guess the you have never been anywhere where the temps are truly "hot". Drum is a "unique" post to say the least, they are ALWAYS deploying, my hubby had just returned home in November 2007 after doing a 15 month deployment and his unit already had deployment orders to go back this winter when we left in May...Drum wasnt our favorite post we ever been to and my husband has been in the Army 15 years...Watertown is not military friendly the majority of them cant stand us, just take a look at craigslist rants and rave one day and you will see what im talking about, the winters are long, the summers are short, there is no hospital on post and no elementary schools on post. Their is new housing, a new bigger px and they are expanding the commissary. Outside of post is finally starting to build up. It gets very very very cold in the winter sometimes 35 below zero, and snows all the time. It can start snowing in Oct and not stop ubtil May. Syracuse is an hour south and it has a nice zoo and mall, waterloo outlet is about 2 hours away, vermont is 3 and half hours away. Make sure you go to the Adirondack Mountains in the fall, new york has the most beautiful fall season i have ever seen, also go in the winter it is very beautiful. Go to Alexandria Bay and take a cruise of the thousand islands, go to sackets harbor, they have a great comedy club every weekend...also go to burrville cider mill, they have the best apple cider donuts, then go to clayton and get some river rat cheese curd, mmm its so good. If you drive a bit away from post it is beautiful, but drum its self sucks,. Here are a few pics that i took while we were there, i have a ton more...if you want to see more or have any questions feel free to email me at fort_sill_army_wife@yahoo.com

  2. Well, life will suck because you are a 2LT...  beyond that it is fine if you can find things to do.  If you are into fishing/hunting/outdoors types of things, then you will be just fine.  If you are looking for clubs/theaters/malls and that type of thing, then you are going to be bummed.  Syracuse is about 45 minutes away and it is O.K.

Being infantry will pretty much suck - field time in the winter is the worst!  2 weeks or so in sub zero temps is not fun at all... but, it will toughen you up if you stick it out with the men instead of hiding in a tent with the Company Commander (or riding around in his Humvee).

Oh, did I mention that there really aren't any mountains there either?  Its more like a swamp, so the summer is hot and humid and pretty much sucks too.

Don't worry too much - 10MTN deploys like crazy, so you won't spend too much time there....
