  1. Yes, you should, because it helps people identify you as a lifeguard, not some random guy who is chillin in the lifeguard chair. This is good both for PR, and in emergencies.

  2. What is your bathing suit? Is it the trunks? In that case, if it's the bathing suit that is shorts, then I don't think anything is wrong with that.

I think that it's only inappropiate if a lifeguard doesn't wear a shirt if it's a female wearing a two piece.

I have swimming and my swin teacher tells us that we have to wear a big shirt if we wear a 2 piece. (ofcourse for the girls, not a guy.)

  3. I don't think you need to wear a shirt. All the lifeguards I know don't wear shirts. Unless you're at the front desk or something. But otherwise, you don't have to wear one.

  4. The big advantage of wearing a distinctive Lifeguarding shirt or uniform bathing suit is the psychological authority it gives to the Lifeguard.  The more official one looks the easier it is to get cooperation from others, expecially during an emergency.  It is very helpful if the Lifeguard is instantly recognizable as a person in authority who has the right to be telling others what to do.  In the long run, it simply makes your job as a Lifeguard easier and more effective.
