Lifeguards, and the paswords they use please help?

Question

I've been wondering for ever how do lifeguards give you a swimming pasword , like how do they know what name to give you? Just by you telling them your name?

um for one .. whats a swimming password, if were talking about the once i think were talking about , where they give you a word and then u go to some guy and then u tell that guy the word and then they give u the hand band thingy , then well i believe they have a list of words for that day , and tada!

Never heard of a swimming password!  I've swam in the ocean at several different beaches around the world and at public pools and I've never been given a password from a lifeguard.  Most of them don't even talk to anyone except the other lifeguards.  Why would you need the lifeguard to give you a password?
