I'm getting addicted to this site. Anyways, we have a 2002 Toyota Highlander...no problems yet, but it has almost 110K. We are trying to anticipate how fast we should save to buy our next car. Anyone out there that has a good educated guess how long our Highlander will last before major problems? Thanks!

  1. 2 things. One is that if you want to get the most money for your trade-in, you want to trade it in now because it's already considered a high mileage car. Second is that they'll run almost forever! Toyota's are known for going beyond the 300k miles mark and still run fine as long as you keep up with maintenance.

  2. All modern US, Japanese, and European cars and light trucks are designed for 10 years/150k mile lives.

Generally if you take care of it they can last much longer.  If you don't it wont make it that far.

  3. My best guess is that you should feel quite comfortable owning it for the first 300,000 miles. This is based on the following:

    (1) The V6 Toyota Highlander has a 1999-2003 (here actually 2001-2003) Reliability Percentrank average of .99, the highest average for any model. For reference, Toyota's 1999-2003 average is .89, Honda's, .84 and General Motors', .31.

    (2) AutoOnInfo.net's detailed reliability and durability tables suggest that a typical 19-year-old Toyota vehicle is about as troublesome to own as a typical 3-year-old General Motors vehicle.

    (3) Toyota overwhelming dominates AutoOnInfo.net's Roster of Vehicles with 300,000 or More Miles. And as the criteria with respect to age and miles are increased, Toyota increases its dominance.

    (4) AutoOnInfo.net's statistics indicate that bigger Toyota vehicles do not age faster than its smaller offerings; in fact, Toyota SUVs seem to hold on to their reliability even better than its other offerings.

    (5) Both the 4-cylinder and the V6 Toyota Highlanders are on AutoOnInfo.net's very selective list of Automobiles with Best Transmission Reliability, each with a Composite Reliability Score of +1.00 on a scale of -1.00 to +1.00.

    (6) The 4-cylinder Toyota Highlander is on AutoOnInfo.net's very selective list of Automobiles with Best Engine Reliability, with a Composite Reliability Score of +1.00 on a scale of -1.00 to +1.00. However, the V6 Highlander is on AutoOnInfo.net's list of Automobiles with Worst Engine Reliability, with a Composite Reliability Score of 0.00 (an average score, but AutoOnInfo.net sets very high standards).
