South africa is lifting its 13 yr ban on killing of elephants. Inorder to restrict the over population of elephant heards in their national conservation parks. Do u think its advisable. I think its one of the most cruel acts agains animals that we humans could do. Elephant nos have reduced considerably in millions across africa, which could drastically change the environment in the continent.

  1. Your lack of knowledge on how Nature works is appalling.  Your kind of thinking caused a great boom in the Grand Canyon Elk population and then almost led to its extinction.  The elk population was protected by banning hunting and the removal, as well as could be done, of its predators.  The population boomed until it reached the limit of the ability of the range to to support it.  This is called the "carrying capacity".  Then they went just a little past this and the weather caused poor food crops.  Almost all the elk died of disease and starvation.

Protecting things absolutely sounds like a great idea in the beginning, but people who really believe that any other animal is intrinsically worth more than a human being should live their philosophy and remove themselves from the gene pool.

There is a concept in population studies called Malthusian Growth.  The relevant part of this can be summed up in one sentence: "The population of an organism will expand to a level above the ability of its habitat to support it."  This is what is happening to the elephant population.  The range set aside can support a certain number of elephants, call this E.  It can support a certain number of rhinoceroses, R.  It can support a certain number of cape buffalo, C.  But it can not support E elephants AND R rhinoceroses AND C cape buffalo.  Nor can it support the E+ some other number of elephants that will result from uncontrolled population growth.

You make it sound as if it is the intention of the people in charge to allow the indiscriminate slaughter of any and all elephants found.  Check your source again.  Properly done, this process will end up having a number of people with more money than they know what to do with making large donations that will be used to improve and expand the protected range in order to be able to remove an excess elephant from the herd.

Would I do this if I had the money?  No.  Does it need to be done periodically in order to protect the overall health of the elephant herd and the herds of other animals?  Yes.  Think about it from that viewpoint, please.

  2. I  can't Handel the thought of it! I couldn't kill a rat , I couldn't kill an elephant. Why don't they just enlarge the parks to accommodate the elephants. They can thin out the people .They are whats over populated.I don't know why people think it is their decision to take life, restrict boundaries, control ! Control and religion.

  3. As a nature lover and conservationist I'm all for it. The elephants are destroying the eco-system of the other animals in the national parks. There is enough evidence of elephants threatening the Kruger National Park's biodiversity to the detrement of the thousands of other species.

  4. ?

  5. Once again humans can't learn to live with it so they kill it. Maybe the human race should slow down{population} and learn to share instead of control and have greed

  6. I have seen a movie about this and i am not in favor of lifting the Ban, lets start treating animals humanely after all they are one of the most important part of our ecosytem and our lives as well. Growing up they serve as an amusement to us going to the zoo (that's as far as i get in seeing live wild animals) as children. I think the african givernment should consider the natural life cycle instead of taking bruatl steps to control elephant population.

  7. I love elephant Jerky

  8. as creul as it might be to you ...to them its an outbreak ...same as the rats are to you ...

but the elephants are not gonna be extinct..on another note have you seen how people act when animals are treated badley......but...what about their own race..???

  9. I saw that ,apparently the population is up from about 1000 since we killed them all during the big white hunter episodes during the early 1900`s,to 80.000.

they do not say how many there where 200 years ago before the systematic ivory slaughters .

They also say that the culling has psychological effects on the elephants, not surprising with the big brains they got (they are very intelligent like Dolphins)and if you shoot a lot they also produce more babies ,like everything else(including people)

I am sure people would also be concerned if they knew that every year 20 percent of them was gonna be shot .We would have a lot more neurotics around

And these Unnatural deaths effect into unnatural sexual activities of the males ,which is stressful for the lightweight females.

So we got fascism, racism ,sexism that the elephants have to contend with coming from humans

Every one should see the movie Earthlings .to come to terms that we share this planet with other species,And just how much right we have got to maintain the power of life over death on everything else.

    What is the answer???

I don`t really know ,we have screwed up the natural ways of this planet so much ,there may be no acceptable political way out for any one specie.

Relocate is maybe the only solution ,but this also causes problems.with territoriality's.

Elephants need a lot of space, they do impose upon other species when confined,Ferrari man is right about that ,

but he cannot be that much of a nature lover ,No elephant would agree with him.

We should have been looking at limiting Human numbers already a long time ago. That is the moral solution from Natures point of view

But nobody want to hear about that

.We will have to swallow more and more sad facts as time goes on
