Light Heavy impresses in Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial
Light Heavy edged to victory in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown in Ireland on Sunday, May 13, 2012. He was not the favourite to win, but still surprised one and all with his brilliant run.
The three-year-old colt was still given pretty decent odds for winning the race, as his overall record was quite impressive. He has now won three races out of four attempts in total. Moreover, he secured the runner up spot once, which means that he has never
dropped out of the top two in his career until now.
Things were not easy at all for Light Heavy yesterday, as he was up against some very good runners. However, he showed excellent stamina and finished on top of the table by a neck distance.
K. J. Manning, who was riding the triumphant colt did not push hard at the start of the race. However, he started increasing the speed, as soon as the finish line approached. He kept the pressure on his rivals and managed to edge past everyone in the end.
The victory was a surprise for J. S. Bolger, who was not expecting his trainee to do extremely well in these conditions. However, he was pleased with the outcome and expected more success in the future.
According to Bolger, “He (Light Heavy) managed to get there despite not liking the ground. He's not the same horse on that ground. He's a top horse with a will to win and lots of ability. He's not going to Epsom. I'm hoping for decent ground at the Curragh
for the Irish Derby.”
He went onto reveal some future plans for Light Heavy, saying that he could line up for action in a couple of more events in Ireland. He added, “He (Light Heavy) definitely does not handle soft ground but he could go to Epsom after the Irish Guineas.”
On the other hand, the race at Leopardstown proved to be a disappointing one for Wrote, who had been awarded with the best odds for victory. He did manage to take the third spot, but had a solid chance if brining up the fourth win of his career.
