Light Heavy stands first in P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown
After a close contest, Light Heavy managed to secure top place in the P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes, taken place at Leopardstown on Sunday, April 15th.
The 1-mile 2-fourlong competition was started at 16:35 GMT. Despite not being the most preferred runner, Light Heavy displayed a thumping performance to stun his rivals. He tracked the leaders early on and subsequently enhanced
his speed to make himself prominent.
After taking a handsome lead, the three-year-old made no mistake. As a result of an excellent job, he bagged the victory by two and a half lengths.
Call To Battle came up with an impressive effort in the end moment, but was unable to challenge the triumphant. Although John M Oxx’s trainee failed to surpass Light Heavy, he did well to seize the runner-up spot by one and
a half lengths.
Tower Rock ended up third on the table. He managed to finish among top three by defeating his stable mate, Athens, by 1¾ lengths.
A. P. O'Brien had the strongest representation in the clash. He was represented by three ace runners, but David Livingston was most likely to perform well.
Under J. P. O'Brien, the 7-4 favourite failed to live up to the expectations. Staying on one pace prevented him from making an impression and as a result, he finished fifth on the table.
O'Brien would have been seriously disappointed with his top trainee’s below par performance. On the contrary, J. S. Bolger was delighted over Light Heavy’s fantastic effort.
He said:
“He'll go the Curragh [Irish Derby] route. We like him and you wouldn't know how good he is until the gun is put to his head.”
"There are no negatives about him at all and he's a good moving horse and is hardy and only does what he has to do. All been well, he'll come back here for the Derrinstown [Derby Trial]," added the trainer.
The Mrs J S Bolger-owned has been performing brilliantly since the start of his career. After securing the runner-up place on his debut, the son of Teofilo went on to seal two back to back wins this season.
