  1. It depends.

Some systems are "honor system" / "proof of payment".  In those systems, they will sometimes stop you and ask for proof of payment.  That's when you whip out the ticket.   How do you tell if your ticket is good?  It will say right on the ticket when it expires!  Easy as cake.  If you are caught without proof of payment, it'll go down kinda like getting pulled over for speeding.  Except I'm not sure the officers have the ability to check you for warrants or arrest you.

Other systems you have to put the ticket in a turnstile or fare gate.  You have as long as you like.  Some of those are a stored value card (they work like a gift card).  If they raise fares on you, you might need to add a few cents to your card to take the same trip.

Other systems your ticket is punched by the conductor.  On those you most likely have forever.  And sometimes the conductor can sell you a ticket on the spot for cash.

  2. If you bought it on lightrail operated by New Jersey Transit, either RiverLine or Hudson-Bergen Lightrail, you must validad and you must use on day of purchase.
