  1. No!  It has a short somewhere.  Check the chord before you use it again.

  2. It's not safe.

Take this from a paranormal investigator: this isn't a paranormal occurrence, it's an electrical one. You need to get an electrician in there to look at your wiring, because you have a short circuit which (by the sound of it) could start a fire in your home if it's in the wall. If it's only the lamp, then my advice is to either rewire it, have it rewired, or throw it away.

Sooner would be better than later!

  3. Turn the switch off, unplug the lamp (which is over-kill).....put a new bulb in, plug the lamp in, and turn it on.

If the lamps continues to 'burn' bulbs you could have a short causing more current to be passed thru it than should be which burns the filament.

You may need to replace the switch, or if you are unable to do so yourself, or find a qualified person to do it, go buy one.

  4. Safe from what? IF you let it cool off and you turned of the light switch then there is no issue to worry about.

  5. As long as the switch is off, sure it is safe. If it happens again, which is doubtful, you may need to have someone (electricians are expensive, everyone seems to know people who are handy) look at it.

  6. Yes, go ahead and remove it - as long as it's cool enough that you won't burn yourself. It sounds like a bad bulb; a weak filament that broke as soon as a current passed through it.
