I do mostly pond fishing for bass, occasionally we go out to a lake.I fish only for catch and release so I don't really have a need for this rod.My son won it at a fishing tournament. There are no rivers nearby with trout in them.We don't fish off a boat either.I just hate seeing a pole go to waste.Other than for panfish are there any other uses for rods like this or is it destined for a garage sale?

  1. Well, panfish are fun to catch, so that IS one good thing to do. But other than that, it's really fun to fight a bass or other similar fish on one of those rods. It could easily handle most bass out of a small pond, even some of the larger ones. It just takes more effort because you have to REALLY tire them out with the drag, but that is part of the fun. Some people only fish on these type rods since they are so much fun.

Since it's a medium-light action instead of an ultra light, then you could easily put on some 8-10lb. line on that and have a ball with any fish you could get out of that pond. These rods are very sensitive, so you could feel the smaller 1-2lb bass bite just as easily as the 10lb bass and the ensuing fight would be great. The only difference between this 4'6" medium-light rod and a 7' medium-light rod is the casting distance, but since many fish, including bass, tend to stay closer to the shore, then it would be perfectly fine.

I would say take it out and give it a shot, it might surprise you. If you don't like it, then you can always sell it later.

I hope this helps. Tight lines!!!

Additional: For ice fishing, it would be perfect! A lot of  people actually use ultralight setups with micro-reels when ice fishing, so what you have would be suited for it.

  2. you failed to mention the style of the rod. baitcaster no no good for ice fishing spinning rod yes you can use it over a hole while it's 30 below out in the wind chill of 45 below..... Sorry  I just don't get the ice fishing thing at all ever. See I would call it a huge poker party on the ice and we're all bringing rods just in case.
