  1. need a faster lens like 2.8 then you could set the ISO to 1600 and at 2.8 your shutter speed would be 125 or 200 of a sec give or take.

  2. You've done everything possible.  The high speed film is going to do the trick.  If not, your shots are too far away and the light too dim.  You could try for "artsy" shots with a deliberate blurriness.   When i was starting, i was amazed when ISO 400 came out and i could freeze every action.  It's the flash that you need and it's not allowed.

When you feel frustrated, think of the guys who took pictures in the American Civil War with those big tripods.

  3. Buy a faster lens.

    AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8

    AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8

f2.8 is 2 stops faster than f5.6 so if your shutter speed is 1/60 at f5.6 it will be 1/250 at f2.8.

    Nikon also offers an 85mm f1.8 lens and a 135mm f2.0  if a fixed-focal length will suffice.

  4. First question, can you open up larger than f5.6? If your glass can, try f4, even f3.2 and larger if possible. That will give you a faster shutter speed.

Next, if you need to brighten up the image, try kicking up the exposure compenstation by +.3 See what you get.

Also, try spot meter, and center meter.

The cheapest way to get a faster shutter, and even the ability to shoot at a lower, cleaner ISO would be a fast prime, like a 50mm, for nikon I think it's f1.8? Better yet, the 85mm f1.4, might be pricey.

In low light I like to shoot at f2.8 a lot. You could probably shoot at ISO 800 with nearly the same shutter speed as ISO 1600 with f5.6, just a rough guess though.

Using software to brighten the pic after the fact, will only result in extra noise, and grainy pics.

  5. simple. Lightouch effect. Makes every single picture brighter
