Question:

Light wavelength, photosynthesis, and plant growth rate - Research?

This quarter in organismal biology I'm doing an experiment to test the affect of different colored light on the rate of plant growth. I have done several web searches and also looked on PLoS.org and BioMed Central and am having trouble narrowing down my search terms and finding information for the research portion of the experiment.

I am not asking for answers, but rather links to or names of (w/ pertinent reference info) scholarly papers and/or experiments related to the color of light and overall plant growth or photosynthesis specifically (i.e. measuring CO2 uptake and O2 emission). Any additional info or suggested search terms would be helpful, but I mostly need cite-able information.

This is a majors level bio class and I my professor's research area is plant physiology and he is very willilng to help, so upper division and graduate-level reading is appreciated, as well.

Thank you.

  1. I don't have answers, why not go to a good science library and ask for access to online journals.

They should have a search facility. Type in the relevant key words and presto, you should have journals that support your thesis. Look for journals that have been cited a lot of times.

Do you have other databases to turn to? You may have to go to another library or need another database. Ask your professor or other professors.

Perhaps, this area is not well researched. Intuitively, different wavelengths of the light should affect the growth rate. Sunlight, with uv rays, should be the optimal for plant growth. You can read up a biochemistry textbook to cite the mechanism of photosynthesis in a nutshell (maybe that is not the emphasis of your thesis).

  2. here are two links for you one is another awnswer and one is a different website they helped me alot. i am doing this project for a science fair so i had 2 research alot too... hope it is helpful to you!!
