Question:

Lightheaded when I stand?

I know many people have asked this question before, so I know I am not alone. Whenever I lay down for a couple of minutes, or wake up from my sleep, I get up and then everything goes black, while I'm standing up. I feel like I might just faint, but I just close my eyes and hold still until it goes away. Everything goes fuzzy, then black, and I feel as if I cannot support my own body. It lasts for about 5 seconds, but I've been getting them more recently, for about 10 seconds. My blood pressure is normal. What is it?

  1. This symptom called "incidental amaurosis". You must visit a neurologist AT FIRST.Maybe it's a problem of your eyes also.Check them too(problems with vessels of retina can cause the same symptom)

  2. was going to suggest low blood pressure.  maybe you're getting up to fast and your pressure isn't keeping up with your body.

  3. Light headedness like what you're describing is most commonly caused by low blood pressure.  The reason low blood pressure causes people to become light headed is because when you lay down and then stand up suddenly, blood rushes from your head to your feet. Orthostatic hypotension could be one culprit.  This is when blood pressure causes you to get dizzy and feel faint, but only when you stand up from lying down.  If your blood pressure is consistently normal, there are lots of other causes that could be behind this.  Your best bet is to tell your doctor everything that's been happening.  It could be anything from dehydration to heart issues to diabetes to nervous system disorders.  It sounds like its gradually getting worse, so I would ask a doctor's opinion about this.

  4. Low iron maybe?  I suffered that too when younger.

  5. Hi there

This also happens to me at times, but not to that extent I get the dizzines and light headed feeling and I see wavey lines instead of blackness. I was told this may be due to low patassium (sp) So when that happens I eat bananas.  Also I think this happens because I am anemic.
