Lighting am I safe in the back seat?

Am I safe in the back seat when it is lighting duing a thunderstorm. Or can lighting hit me if it hits the window beside my back seat

  1. The tires on your car help to keep the entire car protected in most cases from lightning strikes as it reduces conductivity.  This would include the backseat as well.  

    However, you are never completely safe from lightning regardless of where you go.  Isolated incidents of people getting zapped in cars has been recorded, although rare.


  2. Normally it is considered safe to be inside of an automobile during a lightning strike.

  3. The car is grounded by the rubber tires....I doubt you'll get hit by lighting going through the window into your back.

No, If your car gets hit, you will be safe.  The lightning is simply grounded by the rubber tires of your car.  It can however do a number on your cars electrical system.  You might have gotten the superstition about this as weather forecasters often say to stay away from windows during a storm, but this is not because of lightning.
