Lighting bolt hitting a car?

Is lighting loud if it hits my car or is it the thunder? I would like to know?

  1. Thunder is the sound generated by the lightning.  The lightning bolt is very hot, and when it strikes, the air immediately outside the bolt is heated suddenly and explosively.  That produces a concussion wave that we hear as thunder.  The closer you are to the bolt, the louder the thunder.
