Lightning rods are metals which have least resistance to the current produced by the lightning and hence the heavy current readily passes through them(as they are able to handle such heavy current) to reach the ground without damaging any structure.In short, they are like the long hands of the earth which catches the lightning stroke and safely sends to earth thereby neurtalising the potential difference.

Xiramat is correct. I would also like to add the fact that there are many buildings, such as skyscrapers, there are almost guaranteed to be struck by lightning. If lightning were to strike it without protection, there would be major damage. Lightning rods are conductors that ground lightning; all 30,000 Amperes of it. Without them, many lives would be lost, and there would a large amount of property destruction.
