Question:

Lights at Wimbledon?

Are there lights on the stadium at Wimbledon? What about the other majors?

If not, was it getting dark at the end of the men's finals? Did that effect the match? Do you think they would have called it soon if they hadn't finished and made them play the rest in the morning?

  1. I don't think there lights on Centre Court. Thats probably why Federer was complaining. There are definitely lights at the Australian Open because they have night matches and also at the US Open. Also, I heard there was less than half an hour of light remaining just when the match finished.

  2. No there is not. Nor at the French, but there are at the Australian and U.S Open. Yes, it was getting to be dark, at the final. Yes to extent it did, but they still had enough natural light to play. Yes, there was a chance if it continue longer they would have delayed the match until Monday. Hopes this helps!

  3. There are no lights at wimbledon however there are lights at the US Open and Australian Open tournaments as they run through until mid night occasionally. I am not very clear about Roland Garros, but usually, all rounds at wimbledon are to be completed during day light as there are no artificial lights.

You are right about getting dark. Fortunately there is usually a decent amount of light until 9.15 or so. If it had run later than that, they would have stopped the match and would have continued the next day.

I also think that the players would have requested that it be postponed to the next day if they felt they did not have enough light.

  4. They are building a slide roof and they will add lights. Idk about the other majors. Lighting probably did affect the match, but so did the 2 rain delays. Nadal said the lighting did not affect his game, but federer said it affect his. Yes, they would have called it.

  5. no there arent any lights.

  6. I see my contacts are also getting hooked in this tennis section.

Wimbledon's center court has no lights. One man's backwardness is another man's tradition. The French Open doesn't have lights either. They don't cater for night matches. But the US Open and the Australian open have lights.

It's hard to say the lights really affected the outcome of the match. I read that if Federer had broken Nadal in that last game to make it 8-8, they would have resumed the match the next day. But that's it exactly. Federer never looked like breaking Nadal's serve. And it was only a matter of time before Nadal broke his serve. With no tie breaks in the final set, there was only one way that match could have ended. Nadal would have had to sustain some kind of bullet wound injury to lose that match.
