Question:

Lights out, fuse not blown?

I switched the bathroom light on yesterday, and all the lights on the 1st floor of the house went out. I thought I'd blown a fuse, and left it til this morning. I checked the fuse and it was fine, but replaced the wire anyway. None of the lights upstairs work at all. A visual check of the light fitting and wiring showed no damage and the switch is fine. I've replaced the fuse in the fusebox, and now I'm confused as to what the problem could be. Any ideas, before I pick up the phone and shell out on an electrician?

  1. Check to see if any lights in the house are working. If not, it is more than likely a fault in the cable between your meter box and the first light point. This may be due to verman e.g a rat chewing through the cable. And due to the fact that the fuse has not blown, chances are he chewed straight through the neutral conductor, hence why NONE of the lights turn on, and again, why the fuse didn't blow.
