Elie Baup’s men travel to the Aquitaine region to face Francis Gillot’s entertainers looking to take full advantage of Paris Saint-Germain’s slip-up at the hands of Stade Rennais at Parc des Princes
After seeing Paris Saint-Germain fail to make their numerical advantage count against Stade Rennais on Saturday, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 would be looking to return to the summit of the 2012/2013 Ligue 1 Championnat when they face an in-form Girondins de Bordeaux at the Stade Chaban Delmas.
Last night, Paris Saint-Germain lost 2-1 at home to Frederic Antonetti’s side in a game that saw two players from the visiting side sent off including a controversial sending off of Benoit Costil. And, onus is now on Elie Baup’s charges to take advantage of PSG’s mishap by trying to guide Les Phoceens to their first win at Chaban Delmas in 35 years.
The last time Les Phoceens won against Les Girondins was back in the late 70s when they won the game 2-1. However, that win has now become something of a museum artefact as in their next 27 visits, OM have lost 18 times.
Sunday’s game between the two giants of French football would be the 50th Ligue 1 encounter between the two sides and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Francis-c13946 Gillot would be happy to see that stats and history are heavily stacked in his team’s favour.
After being unbeaten in their first nine Ligue 1 games, Bordeaux lost to SC Bastia and that defeat was quickly followed by a Coupe de la Ligue defeat at the hands of reigning champions Montpellier Herault who drew 1-1 away to Valenciennes last night.
That defeat provoked a furious response from Gillot and players responded to it in great style. Bordeaux are currently on a three-game unbeaten run in all competitions and are in seventh place in the league standings, just two behind second placed Olympique de Marseille.
Although not many people are putting their faith of Girondins’ chances of challenging for the Championelle, Gillot is not worried about it.
“We’re edging into position, but no one’s talking about us, which isn’t all bad, even if people are talking in glowing terms about teams with the same number of points as us,” said Gillot.
“But we keep on talking about those teams. We’re ready to spring an ambush, even if our European games sap our energy. When we want to do things well, we can. Perhaps there will be a nice surprise at the end of the season.”
Olympique de Marseille on the other hand, have proven to be a generous side in their last two league outings as they let leads slip in the closing minutes twice. The most recent of this was against OGC Nice. And, central defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Souleymane-Diawara-c33850 says that the team has learnt its lesson and they will shut up shop.
Victory over Bordeaux would propel Les Phoceens on top of the Ligue 1 standings and after failing to take advantage of PSG’s slip-up last time around, Baup would be hoping to see his team take a good lead over their archrivals at the top of the table.
Predictions
The game is bound to be a cagey affair at the start but with both managers keen on maintain and further building momentum, would go for each other’s jugulars. There are goals in this game and a draw could possibly be an outcome.
