Ligue 1 special: A less ambitious Girondins de Bordeaux for the 2011/2012 season
After a complicated finale to the 2010/2011 Ligue 1 season, Girondins de Bordeaux are now looking to rebuild the side. After two years that saw both the good and hard side of life in the Ligue 1, Les Girondins are ready to become a little less ambitious
ahead of the 2011/2012 Ligue 1 season.
Club president, Jean-Louis Triaud also understands that the club will take time to once again become one of the best in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 and is ready to scale down his demands and expectations for the upcoming season.
Achievable targets
New coach of Les Girondins, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Francis-c13946 Gillot said that the side’s next season’s goals would be to remain in the Ligue 1 and play good football. Jean-Louis Triaud also shared Gillot’s sentiments and said that the club is willing to minimize its expectations
in order to put a little less pressure on players and the coaching staff.
While talking to the media in a press conference, the Bordeaux supremo said, “Asking my players to qualify for the Champions League puts unnecessary pressure on the players. All I ask of the (players) is to keep the club in the top division. We do have great
hopes for next season but have not made any specific targets either.”
Undisclosed summer shopping
Gillot is expected to see almost the same faces who played last season. Good news for Les Girondins is that talismanic goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso has extended his contract at the club which would keep him at Stade Chaban Delmas until 2015. Though Monsieur
Triaud has not named the club’s transfer targets yet, it is expected that a few young players from the reserve side might be given ample opportunities to impress.
However, the club might have to do with the departure of a few players. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alou-Diarra-c5259 and Benoit Tremoulinas have been under the radar of Marseille and Lyon respectively and might leave the club.
Alou Diarra is already getting close to a move to Ligue 1 giants http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127. Marseille's official website has already revealed that the France international's transfer would be finalised in the next 48 hours.
Jaroslav Plasil has been linked with a move away from the club as well with Lille the likely destination. The Czech international once voiced his displeasure at the club's lack of ambition. Understandably, the former Monaco man wants to win a few trophies
as he nears the twilight of his career so the club should be offloading him this summer.
A club devoid of ambition
Les Girondins last won the Championnat in the 2008/2009 Ligue 1 season. That season turned out to be a memorable one for the Bordeaux-based club as they won the Coupe de La Ligue and the Trophee des Champions to complete a historic treble. However, things
changed and Bordeaux never came close to the achievements of 2009.
Since then, the club has not managed to win any silverware. At that time, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-c29347 Le Guen was the coach at Stade Chaban Delmas. Many people have argued that the club’s lack of ambition could prove to be harmful for the players.
However, Triaud has done well by assigning realistic and achievable targets at Bordeaux for next season knowing that the club is not strong enough to compete with the likes of Marseille, Lille and Paris Saint-Germain. Anything that the club achieves beyond
those realistic targets would surely be great.
Furthermore, having easy targets infront of them might make players go for more and give them that added motivation that is required to stay consistent in the Ligue 1. A good ploy by the President that might pay off in the future.
