Ligue 1 special: Flashback to the last day of the 2010/2011 Ligue 1 season
The 2010/2011 Ligue 1 season was a success for all those who were involved in the game. LOSC Lille, under the guidance of the ever-watchful Rudi Garcia romped to their first Championelle in 54 years. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marvin-Martin-c24496 turned out to be the best playmaker of the
season with 17 assists to his name.
A lot of ‘things’ happened throughout the league but the last day that is the Week 38 of Ligue 1 turned out to be a case of one evening, four farewells. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 said goodbye to Paris Saint-Germain veterans Claude Makelele and Gregory Coupet while Lille lifted
the ever-elusive Championnat.
Bettor.com takes a look at four events that made the last day of the 2010/2011 Ligue 1 season one of the most memorable day of the campaign.
Au Revoir to two legends
On the last day of the Ligue 1, four players played their last games for their respective clubs. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127, Ulrich Rame played his last game for FC Girondins de Bordeaux and finally,
two of France’s greatest players, Claude Makelele and Gregory Coupet featured for Paris Saint-Germain for one last time.
Gabriel Heinze and Rame are yet to spell curtains on their careers but Claude Makelele and Gregory Coupet will no more be seen in the playing field of Parc des Princes.
For nearly 15 years, Claude Makelele set the standard for a new breed of defensive midfielders. At the age of 38, the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 man decided to call it a day and thus ended the chapter of an illustrious career that paved a path for the modern day defensive
midfielders.
Coupet was also 38 when he retired and would always be remembered as one of the best keepers France ever produced. Playing over 518 games for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130, Coupet joined PSG in 2009 and chose to retire at a club that brought him in when his former
club deemed him surplus to requirements.
AS Monaco to Ligue 2
After 34 years of uninterrupted presence, AS Monaco said goodbye to Ligue 1 football for at least one season. For several seasons, the writing was on the wall for the Monte Carlo based club when they chose to capitalise on the sale of  Nene, Modesto and
Perez.
Risky recruitment of the likes of Eidur Gudjohnsen, Mbokani and Christian Vieri never helped Monaco’s case either as the club kept on standing at the precipice.
The descent of Monaco to Ligue 2 has its repercussions as well. Talismanic captain Stephen Ruffier has joined Saint-Etienne while Chu-Young Park is also looking to leave the club in order to avoid Ligue 2 football.
Though AS Monaco have been hit hard, the club should be able to bounce back to the Ligue 2 if it manages to make full use of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/U-17-Youth-team-c40787 players who helped AS Monaco to the Coupe Gambardella last season.
Lyon and Sochaux achieve their targets
A duel for a place in Europe is a speciality of the last few weeks of a season. Though the first two places were already taken by Lille and Marseille respectively, third, fourth, fifth and sixth places were very much available for the likes of Lyon, PSG,
Sochaux and Stade Rennais.
Lyon needed to grab the final Champions League place in order to avoid being called their season as a ‘total fiasco’. Les Gones were helped in their cause largely due to PSG’s 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne while Sochaux were helped by Lille who beat Rennes
3-2.
Consequence: Lyon will play in the qualifying stages of the Champions League while Sochaux are in the Europa League. Rennes and PSG on the other hand will have to qualify for the Europa League.

Who would be the topscorer in the end? Sow or Gameiro? This was the question that many journalists and experts were asking on the eve of the Week 38 of Ligue 1.
At that time, Sow had 22 goals while Gameiro had 21 goals to his name. A close competition was expected but Sow left no chance for Gameiro as the Senegalese international scored a hat-trick against his former side Rennais in a 3-2 win.
Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro scored the only goal for his side as Lorient lost 2-1 to Auxerre.
