The club was founded in 1899 and so far, has won nine Ligue 1 titles. In addition to that, Les Phoceens have won the prestigious Coupe de France a record ten times. In 1993, Marseille became the first ever French club to win the UEFA Champions League.
Olympique de Marseille were crowned champions of France in 2009/2010 campaign. However, they failed to carry on from there and in 2010/2011 Ligue 1 campaign; they were beaten to the title by Lille.
Winners of nine Championelles endured a miserable 2011/2012 season. Didier Deschamps’ side failed to hit the top gear and ended the campaign at lowly 10thplace.
There were certain reasons behind the club’s recent slump in form. However, it is expected that all such issues will be resolved before the start of next Ligue 1 season. Marseille have a talented and strong squad and they have the services of a very gifted
coach, Didier Deschamps. It won’t be surprising if the Rhone giants lock horns with the very best in the business in the upcoming season.
