It’s the end of a long series of rumours as AS Monaco go into the hands of Dimitry Rybolovlev. The Russian’s company, Monaco Sports Invest has now become a major shareholder in the club with a principality of up to 66.67% of shares
Relegated at the end of the 2010/2011 Ligue 1 campaign, AS Monaco have continued to struggle. Currently, the club has accumulated just 13 points in the Ligue 2 and are the bottom of the Ligue 2 table with 18 games played.
Moreover, the Monegasque club has won just one game which means that relegation to Ligue 3 could be a distinct possibility.
Gone were the days when AS Monaco used to compete for top honours in French and European football. Experiencing significant hardship, the residents of Stade Louis II had been looking for a plan B. Discussions with Dimitry Rybolovlev who ranks at 93rd
in the list of world’s wealthiest people had started a few months ago. Now, these negotiations have found a favourable outcome as the Russian tycoon is now the new owner of ASM.
Having pledged 100 million Euros for the next four years, MSI have become a shareholder of the club with a stake of up to 66.67% share. The rest of the 33% share is owned by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AS-Monaco-FC-c38466 which represents the interests of the Principality of Monaco.
“Many clubs are being confronted by the demands of modern football, even high-level financial difficulties. It is inevitable that ASM FC had an ideal partner. The agreement opens a new page in the history of the football team so dear to the Principality
which I hope attains its past stature as it (AS Monaco) made her one of the jewels of the sporting life of Monaco,” said Prince Albert.
Rybolovlev on the other hand, also said that he bought the club in the interests of football and said that he knows all about the club being a symbol of pride and tradition of Monaco.
The Russian billionaire ranks at 79 in Forbe’s billionaire list and his first task would be to guide As Monaco far away from the bottom half of the table and the club would be looking to buy a few players in the winter transfer window to finish the campaign
with their status as a Ligue 2 side intact before even thinking of gaining back promotion to Ligue 1 football.
