  1. No such rule exists.

Scroll down to the headings CHECK and MATE at the site below.

  2. The person who checkmates the king is declared the winner.

  3. No.   No best play scenario exists.

  4. The game Connect 4 has been "solved", meaning that somebody has figured out how to play a perfect game-- you can ALWAYS win if you go first, assuming you know how to play perfectly.

Chess has not been solved, nor is it likely to be solved in the near future.  Hence, nobody knows whether or not a perfect game is possible.

Chess is potentially a solvable game, however, unlike other games that involve chance, such as Monopoly, Scrabble, Poker, etc.  So it is conceivable that computers will be able to someday calculate the perfect chess game, which they typically do by actually playing out ALL the possibilities (every conceivable game, or close to it).

So is going first going to help you win? No, probably not.

  5. Chess is NOT solved if that is the question. However.. both Gary Kasparov and Bobby Fischer agreed player one may have an advantage in the game.. as white starts the game with what a GO player would call sente.

In regards to how a computer "solves" a game. Contrary to popular belief.. the algorithm will NOT explore every node.. as the program will remove any permutation in which a "mistake" exists within the lines of action. Thus all of the permutations which exist beyond the "mistake" are never explored. This why a computer was able to "solve" Checkers.. which has been proven to be a draw via "perfect play".. in less than 20 years of computation. The ultimate prize is for the game of GO to be "solved".. but unfortunately the level of technology needed to program a strong AI algorithim has not yet been developed.. let alone one which can (possibly) "solve" the game.
