Lili Zhou triumphs Women's 800m freestyle final: Day one – 2011 Swimming World Cup, Beijing
Lili Zhou of China met the expectations of her fans by winning gold medal of Women's 800m freestyle final on the initial day of 2011 Swimming World Cup in Beijing, China on Tuesday, November 8.
Beijing is the sixth stop of seven-stage World Cup series, organised by the international aquatics sport governing body, Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA).
The 17-year-old Zhou displayed her spectacular efforts in the thirty-two lap freestyle event. She completed her initial 100 meters of the swim in a fastest time 59.81 seconds and stayed considerably ahead of her team-member, Shiyue Cao.
The Chinese veteran continued her fantastic efforts in the second round, where she clocked a time of 2 minutes and 02.94 seconds. She was followed by Cao, who remained nearly three seconds from her preceding swimmer and posted a time of 2 minutes and 05.84
seconds.
Subsequently, Zhou demonstrated her exhausting efforts and completed her first half of the swim in a time of 4 minutes and 08.51 seconds. She was trailed by her team-mate, who covered the same distance in a time of 4 minutes and 14.66 seconds.
Cao tried her best to overwhelm Zhou in the second half of the distant freestyle swim but she failed to answer her team-mate's ruthless efforts. With her persistence efforts, the 17-year-old Chinese remained fastest in final half of the race and submitted
a time of 8 minutes and 18.79 seconds for the title of the event.
With her astonishing efforts, she remained 12.15 seconds ahead of her subsequent competitor, Cao, who reported a time of 8 minutes and 30.94 seconds for silver medal.
In the meantime, the arena was thrilled with the third fastest effort of China's Jing Liu that helped China to make a clean sweep in the 800m event. Liu remained just 0.13 seconds away from her former finisher and reached the podium for bronze medal by producing
an effort of 8 minutes and 31.07 seconds.
The arena enjoyed breath-taking efforts of all position holders, who proved their mettle in the Women's 800m discipline. In addition, the World Cup series will conclude on November 13 after its final stop in Tokyo, Japan.
