Question:

Lily plant not producing flowers?

earlier in the spring, i planted 6 lily bulbs. However only one made it (grew to about 6 in), but didn't produce any flowers. The plant just now let the older part die, and grew a newer stem. How can i try to get the new stem to produce a flower? it took about a week for the new stem to grow as tall as the old one did (the first one took about a month to reach in.)

i am getting them plenty of water, and my neighbors down the street have beautiful lilies so i know they can grow well in my area.

thanks

  1. They won't flower this year. You need to make sure they are in a good situation -- well drained, fertile soil in a sunny location. Most important is to plant them at the recommended depth, often 6 -9 inches. Encourage good leaf growth this year. This will strengthen the bulb when the leaves die back and you should get good flowers next year. They often take several years to naturalize in a garden.

  2. Often when planting bulbs it takes a year or two for them to establish. Many times not blooming much or at all the first year but each year thereafter they will look better and better. However, Make sure your lillies are planted in sun (the more, the better). They will not bloom with inadequate sun light. Be patient. As long as they are in sun, lillies are hard to mess up (-:
