Limewire, if its illegal then why is the website still open

If limewire is sooo illegal then y hasnt the government shut it down. napster used to be illegal and the government shut down their site. (But later reopend it) Limewire is so popular that you think they would have heard about it by now. Is the entire thing illegall like uploading and downloading it, or is only illegal to upload stuff onto it.

The program Limewire itself isn't illegal. It has many legal uses. It's only illegal when you're uploading and downloading content for which you don't own the copyright, for example music and movies.

The government haven't shut it down because the program itself isn't illegal, only some of the content on it.

I think it has something to do with the line...

[Not an exact quote:] "You may only download songs that you already own on another format."  Saying basically you already own it anyways so your not doing anything wrong.

Same thing with emulators for video games.

But everyone knows that they download songs/content that they do not already own.. Thus the illegal part :P

limewire is not illegal exactly

users are making it illegal

the right way to make use of limewire share files that is you made yourself so that other people can download it

but people are sharing files that is not made by them like copyrighted music and that makes it free to other people

limewire is not illegal its how you use it that can be illegal

They haven't because their is a paid version, Limewire Pro.

Because of this, you're taking a risk with the "free" version where as with the paid version, its legal.

The program its self isn't illegal. Limewire is a peer to peer network so therefore copyright material can be downloaded from Limewire. It's what you download that is illegal...

im not positive but they cant control what goes from P2P.. so they arnt illigal just everyone who sends stuff

It's not illegal as they don't host any illegal material. It is illegal to download or upload any material protected by copyright.

thing about it is that its is like torrent files from computers around the world they take bits and peices from computers to make the program and its not illgal intill you download it and you open it
