Question:

Limited or no connectivity (Netgear router wireless)

Hi,

I've got following problem:

We have got wireless at home and a couple of days ago our desktop showed "limited or no connectivity" - I tried a system restore but that didn't help. I have re-installed the Netgear adapter but that didn't change anything. Our two laptops who are also part of the wireless are working just fine. What can I do to get the desktop back online? Could it be a problem with the firewall (COMODO)??? Any help much appreciated, please in plain English.

Thanks,

Mara

  1. Unplug the power from your Cable or DSL modem, your router, and your PCs.

    Wait 2 minutes.

Plug in the Cable or DSL modem to power. Verify that the "Internet" light is solid.

    Wait another 2 minutes

    Plug in the Netgear router.

    Wait another 2 minutes.

Boot your computers, log into Windows, and try to connect to the Internet.  Check the activity light on the router to see if its blinking.

If it is blinking, but you can't get to a webpage, you'll need to check that your TCP/IP settings are set to automatic, also known as DCHP settings.  Once you verify those settings are set to automatic, open the windows Command prompt , and type "ipconfig /all", make sure your computer has an IP address.

If it doesn't, call your Internet Service Provider for help.

  2. your system is getting IP address from APIPA ( IP range is 169.-------)

check your system is getting correct ip that your ISP is provised if not that is the problem, your system is not getting IP from the provided loop.

  3. mmm.....your firewall should be ok , I would be more worried about spyware eating up your internet connection , has your computer been slow or acting different well it might be spyware or if your don't have your router protected with WEP or better someone might be using your router for themself and thats where I would start , if you don't know how to set it up just look at your manual it should help you or call ,go online it's all pretty simple and it not only stops others from using your router ,but protects your computer as well plus run a good spyware scan such as spybot , counterspy .....oh also on the back of your router should be a reset button or a pin hole to reset everything to default setting , hope this helps you :)
