Lin Dan grants walkover to Chen Jin in Men’s Singles final of the Singapore Open Super Series
Chinese shuttler, Lin Dan, granted a walkover to his team-mate, Chen Jin, due to stomach pain, in the final showdown of Men’s Singles in the 2011 Singapore Open Super Series, on June 19, 2011.
The ruling Olympic Champion, Lin, who is currently Number Two in the world rankings of Men’s Singles, conceded a walkover on the fourth occasion. He conceded walkovers to his opponents in the China Open 2010, Hong Kong Open 2010, Malaysia Open 2011 and now
in the Singapore Open 2011.
Fans were very disappointed for the no-show by the most celebrated shuttler in the history of badminton. They paid for tickets to witness the three times World Champion and reigning Olympic gold medallist in action, but Lin’s stomach pain made all of the
spectators quite dissatisfied.
The 27-year-old Lin came in the court and apologised to the spectators, who came to watch him playing against his team-mate and ruling World Champion, Chen Jin.
While talking about his withdrawal from the title-match, Lin clarified, “I had a tough match against Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark during the semi-final) and drank too much cold water. I went to bed not feeling too good and in the morning consulted the
team doctor.”
He further added, “I was diagnosed as having gastroenteritis and was advised not to play. I am sorry for the fans who came to watch me play and I apologise.”
His walkover also disappointed countless fans not only in Singapore, but also in the entire world. However, followers will be eager to see him in good shape in the upcoming event of Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2011, which will start from tomorrow,
June 21, in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Malaysia’s national coach for Singles, Rashid Sidek, wants Lin to play in the Indonesia Open to his full potential, as fans want to see quality badminton. Lin is expected to overcome his stomach pain very soon, which prevented him from participating in a
press conference prior to the Singapore Open and also, in the final of the event.
