Lin Dan thinks his honest effort against Chong Wei will repair Chinese players’ image
When China’s female shuttlers are under fire for bringing shame to the game in London Olympics its badminton king Lin Dan hopes that his effort in the title match will help them to regain their due respect in the arena.
World Number one Lin Dan unseated his Malaysian nemesis Lee Chong Wei to defend his Olympic title.
This much-awaited battle, which grasped the attention of one billion people around the world, lasted for three gruelling sets.
Both legendary characters made this a memorable contest by putting on a great show of skills while piling up final figures of 15-21, 21-10 and 21-19.
The Olympic champion Lin Dan believes that this gruelling fight will not only restore the credibility of game but also repair the image of Chinese shuttlers.
Earlier, World Number one Women’s Doubles team Yu Yang-Wang Xiaoli faced disqualification for match-throwing allegations and this really damaged their country’s image on international level.
Lin Dan, who has become first Olympian to defend his title, admitted that lot of negativity was associated with Chinese campaigners but he also mentioned his honest effort against Chong Wei to reinstate their pride.
He said, "I hope I can change people's attitude about Chinese players and badminton through my fierce game against Lee Chong Wei."
Moreover, the maestro also hoped that such problems will not damage the badminton’s popularity across the globe rather he is positive that the sport will attract more and more people.
Lin Dan said, “The sport has suffered some negative things in the past few days. I hope the sport will enjoy better and sustained development, which is more important."
Meanwhile, China's badminton chief Liu Fengyan commended national campaigners for showing brilliancy under huge pressure.
He stated that their victory proves that they still are the best despite of the absence of their top team. He declared this success a result of solid determination of Chinese players.
He said, "What happened in the women's doubles didn't affect us. We helped our players consolidate their faith in victory after the two players' disqualification, and we finally got the championships."
China created history by sweeping the table with five gold medals and gave a strong statement that its reign is going to continue also in the future.
