Lina Stanciute falls to Daria Gavrilova in opening round – OrtoLaakarit Open 2011
Eighth seeded Lithuanian Lina Stanciute suffered a straight set defeat against the Russian qualifier Daria Gavrilova in the opening round of the OrtoLaakarit Open 2011, an ITF event taking place on the hard courts in Helsinki,
Finland. She jolted down a 4-6, 3-6 loss on Wednesday, Gavrilova on the other hand advanced into the second round.
World number 236 Stanciute displayed dismal performance throughout the match against Gavrilova, ranked 149 levels below her. She lost her serve three times and subsequently exited from the tournament with disappointment.
25-year-old Stanciute confidently entered the opening set and after getting the first blood, she went 3-2 up. However, she lost her edge in the proceeding game, levelling the scores at 3-3. The Lithuanian kept remaining serves
until she lost her serve again in the tenth game and suffered a 4-6 defeat.
She clobbered a lower first serve share of 60 percent as compared to the Russian’s 64 percent and registered an acceptable 67 percent win on it. Stanciute converted only one out of three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage
and failed to fend off both breakpoints faced.
The Lithuanian managed to hold her opening serve in the second game, squaring the scores at 1-1. She bagged remaining serves through blistering forehands until the eighth game when Stanciute gifted her serve. As a result she lost
the set with a 3-6 score line.
The Lithuanian veteran squandered the only breakpoint opportunity and saved only two out of three breakpoints faced. She manipulated a better first serve share of 65 percent in contrast with the Russian’s 62 percent but wasted
it.
17-year-old Gavrilova on the other hand secured a second round spot where she will confront a wild card enterer Piia Suomalainen who crushed Ukrainian Irina Buryachok with a bagel.
Another casualty of the day was Michaela Buzarnescu, the third seed, who will join the Lithuanian towards the exit doors of the tournament.
The Romanian barely did anything in the opening set and despite raising her level of game in the second set, dragging it to a tie-breaker. She prevailed in it and eventually suffered a 1-6, 6-7(2) defeat against Croatian Ana Vrljic.
Buzarnescu cashed in half of the four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage but dusted away only half of the eight breakpoints came across. She also produced a lower first serve share of 61 percent as compared to the Croat’s
71 percent and earned only 50 percent win on it.
